Aims and Objectives

Session Outline

Participants in this 3.5 hour online workshop can expect to examine the myths and realities of sexual violence within a framework of violence against women and girls. Participants will develop an understanding on the law surrounding rape and sexual assault with a focus on consent. Participants will be introduced to a model of best practice in working with sexual violence and will identify key principles in responding to disclosures of sexual violence sensitively and appropriately.

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • Sexual Violence in Social Context
    • Exploring the impact of societal attitudes and myths around sexual violence on survivors
    • Awareness of how societal attitudes towards sexual violence can either inhibit or encourage disclosure
  • Sexual Violence Facts
    • Definitions of rape and sexual assault
    • Defining consent in law and ethical practice
  • Best practice when responding to sexual violence-
    • Introduction to the empowerment model as best practice in supporting survivors of sexual violence
    • Name and understand key principles in responding to disclosures of sexual violence 
    • Increase awareness of specialist external sexual violence support services
  • Check-out, grounding and self-care
