International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

Tuesday 6th February 2018

What is Female Genital Mutilation?

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a collective term for a range of procedures which involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is sometimes referred to as female circumcision, or female genital cutting. FGM is a global issue and happens all over the world.

Tuesday 6th February is the United Nations Zero Tolerance to FGM Day. The Lewisham Safeguarding Children’s Board are hosting two Drop-In Sessions (one at the Civic Suite, one at Lewisham Hospital) both from 12pm to 3pm, to help all staff working with children and families in;

  • Knowing when to notify the Police and when to refer to the MASH
  • Understanding what constitutes Mandatory Duty
  • Awareness of the FGM referral pathway in Lewisham
  • Lewisham FGM Guidance Flowchart and Procedures
  • Clarifying the difference between a concern and a disclosure

Your questions will be answered at the Drop-In by FGM Leads from Children Social Care, as well as the Lewisham Council VAWG Team, and specialist voluntary organisations. There will be resources available on the day for you to share with your colleagues and services.

For more information please see the Lewisham Safeguarding Children Board website.
