Young Carers
Imago is a charity that supports local communities. One of the groups that they support is carers. They support over 12,000 carers through services, including over 8,000 young carers from the age of 4, young adult carers and adult carers.
Imago offers the Maximising Wellbeing for Unpaid Carers service to young carers in Lewisham that are taking on caring responsibilities for a family member with a long-term illness, disability, mental health or substance misuse issue. Young Carers support the cared-for and other family members with practical tasks, physical care, and emotional support, whilst at the same time trying to live their own lives. They support young carers in Lewisham to minimise the negative impacts of caring and to access social and educational opportunities and emotional support, highlighting the positive impacts of being a carer, such as increased resilience and empathy.
Young carers can access a variety of activities, workshops and respite trips. The service also includes one-to-one support and in school support when needed. Working alongside school staff and other professionals, they aim to ensure young carers have access to the support they need and know they are not alone.
The Maximising Wellbeing for Unpaid Carers service works with schools, communities, and statutory and voluntary agencies to identify hidden Young Carers and offers training and information to professionals.
